1956 Winter Olympics were held in the town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. At this edition of the Winter Olympics participated competitors coming from 32 countries, 687 male athletes and 134 female.

The opening ceremony was held on January 26, 1956 and the closing on February 5, the same year.

Olympic Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo were open by Giovanni Gronchi, the president of Italy of that time. The ceremony took place on the Stadio Olympica rink in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
